Sunset song is nearing completion…Shot in glorious 65mm and Arri Alexa in Scotland, New Zealand and studios at Filmland in Luxembourg, Terence Davies’ achingly beautiful screenplay, inspired by Lewis Grassic Gibbon’s (1901-1935) acclaimed novel, follows Chris Guthrie from childhood, through to motherhood played by Agyness Deyn as the powerful central female character and symbol for Scotland. Her strength of character, never undermined by the hardship she faces, offers a rich tale set against the majestic Scottish landscape of Aberdeenshire set within a small, symbolic, rural community trying to forge a meagre living from an inhospitable land. All this takes place in the rising turmoil of the early 20th Century a time of vast industrial change, devastation brought about by WWI and the Great Depression.
Terence Davies’ most ambitious film to date (and one he describes as his ‘intimate epic’) stars Agyness Deyn, Peter Mullan and Kevin Guthrie – so watch this space for more news soon!
Hi there, I’m a journalist with STV in Aberdeen. It would be great to let people know when “Sunset Song” is ready for release. Many people in and around Aberdeenshire are looking forward to the film.
Thanks, Neil Drysdale

We should have an answer for you very soon-thanks for the enquiry – sorry for such a tardy reply!
Sol
As one of the many extras in the film I too am interested in the release date.
As the grandson of the book’s author, I know the family would like to know about the release plans too.

Thank you so much for getting in touch – Terence Davies will be delighted that you made contact. The film is currently being considered for various festivals and we don’t have the release plan formulated just yet. But this will take shape very soon so we will contact you then-very best,

We in the Netherlands (and many other 70mm fans) would like to know when SUNSET SONG will be released? AND WHERE: Maybe in the 70mm EYE FILM Museum in Amsterdam??
AND IF THERE ARE COMING 70MM PRINTS IN THE CINEMA ?????
I have sent you some time ago a publication on 70mm filming called DIGITAL & 65mm. as a gift for Terence Davies!
Kind regards
Johan C.M. Wolthuis, publisher and editor.

Many thanks for the materials we were very taken by your magazine. Sunset Song exteriors were shot on 65mm on the Arri 765 and all interiors were shot digitally on the Arri Alexa. We have a 4K master but don’t have plans to go back to 65mm print – it’s just not in our budget sadly!

If you don’t have the budget for a 70mm print, then why not turn to crowdfunding. I’m sure I’m not the only one who would want to help
Many of us exiles south of the border are also eagerly and anxiously awaiting the release. Will it be as good as the BBC production?! Will it be on general release or only to independents? I have seen 1st June mentioned. Is that just a rumour.
Hi Sol,
I’m bursting with anticipation and excitement to see ‘Sunset Song’ on the big screen yet impatient and frustrated because I want to see it right now, this very minute!!!
Seriously so looking forward to seeing it and hoping it premieres soon.
Hope alls well with you all.

Bit tardy a reply but it won’t be much longer for some real news on this!

Just been checking the website to see if there is any further news about the release of Sunset Song. As manager of the the Grassic Gibbon Centre in Arbuthnott, I am asked for news about it all the time. It seems a long time since last May when the crew were here filming in the Mearns but by the look of things we won’t have to wait much longer. Kind regards to everyone involved, Isabella

It was a memorable day for all concerned and fitting that we completed the last day of filming in Arbuthnott. I hope to come back on this page soon to have release news for the film.

I was an extra in the scottish shots and would be most gratfull if you could let me know when the release plan is out or where I could check for that.
Regards
David
We are hoping to have this news soon but we’re not quite ready yet! Thanks for the enquiry.
As extras in NZ for the very very hot day in woolen suits harvest field/off to church scenes my 91 year old mate and I are eagerly awaiting the release. We trust the “doffing the hat” closeup hasn’t been cut which the Director came across the hillside to offer his personal thanks for ol’ Gerry’s efforts, which we really appreciated.
Hi Sol, yet another extra here eager to learn if the release date and venues. Rubbish news from Cannes, hopefully better news from the other festivals.
Very proud to have been part of the film.
Mearns Youth Forum are now in the position to run cinema screenings in the new theatre at Mearns Community Campus. We would love to host the new sunset song screening if possible. Please keep us in mind if you are looking to host local community screenings. We are asked about the film release date regularly.
Many thanks Lynn Bartlett.
Like the rest of the posts here I’m desperate to see the screening. I was an extra that landed the role of the piper and very keen to see the outcome. I was also an extra in the BBC production when I was in primary school so very keen to this new version.
As the owner of the wee vintage dress shop in Fettercairn . Encore Dress and Vintage Agency, which was invaded by the starring stray flock I would love to catch the premiere of what looks to be a fabulous film.
Hi,
I’ve just seen and thoroughly enjoyed Sunset Song.
On the soldiers uniforms was ‘Brecknock ‘ which is a Welsh regiment. I was a bit confused over this – perhaps research showed that Scots may have found their way into Welsh units?
Jim
We’ll look into that!
